Abstract:
KPBS burn coverages are Arc/Info vector polygon coverages. Coverages are tiled by burning year and include polygons representing the extent of burned area for the applicable burn year. A burn year is from Nov. 1 of the previous calendar year through Oct. 31 of the current burn year (ie. 1998 burn year is Nov. 1, 1997 - Oct. 31, 1998). Coverage data includes information about the type of burn each polygon represents.
Purpose:
KPBS burn coverages are intended to delineate the extent burned areas on KPBS and provide a seamless chronology of burn treatments on KPBS from its establishment in 1972 to the present.
Supplemental_Information:
These coverages were revised beginning in Jan. 1998 to accurately register with 1:12,000 DOQ images. These data will not correctly overlay with KPBS GIS data developed prior to 1998. KPBS burn coverages represent watershed boundaries as they occured during the year of coverage. Some watershed boundaries have changed over KPBS history. Therefore, it is essential that burn coverages be acquired along with the appropriate watershed coverage for accurate overlays and map display.

Completed coverages were compared with KPBS burn records to check consistency and accuracy of digitized polygons. Additional information was gathered from individuals who were involved with the actual burning or with controlling wildfires.

Burn polygons were digitized to Konza watershed boundaries as they existed at the time of the burns. Attribute data was from field notes collected from 1972 - present. Prescribed burns are conducted on a per watershed basis and were digitized accordingly accept where field notes indicated that significant portions of a watershed were not burned. Partial burn and wilfire boundaries were digitized based on field notes and sketches. The detail and accuracy of field notes varies markedly between years and observers. Whenever possibile, field notes were used in conjunction with DOQQ images to determine topographic features most likely to form the terminal boundary of a wildfire or partial burn. Burn polygons are accurate at the watershed scale but do not reflect the fine-scale patchwork patterns of burns.
