Problems: Arc IMS is a powerful tool but there are several bugs and other warts that have not been worked out. The following are problems you may encounter:

Slow perfomance viewing maps or unable to see maps. The java viewer utilizes resources on the client (local) machine so map rendering will be affected by the performance of the local client. ESRI recommends a minimum of 64 Mb of RAM on client machines for map viewing. Also, slow Internet connections will slow performance and may prevent maps from displaying at all. It may take as long as 5-15 minutes to download map views over modem connections.
Troubleshooting: Viewer installation window keeps displaying. ArcIMS will install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.3 and ArcIMS Java viewer the first time you attempt to view a java map page.
